Military Taps For Funerals

- Military members on active duty or in the Selected Reserve.

- Former military members who served on active duty and departed under conditions other than dishonorable.

- Former military members who completed at least one term of enlistment or period of initial obligated service in the Selected Reserve and departed under  conditions other than dishonorable.

- Former military members discharged from the Selected Reserve due to a disability incurred or aggravated in the line of duty. As a veteran of any branch of service you can have a military funeral as long as you were discharged under a General Discharge or higher. This is also known  as taps.

In order to have a military funeral you must advise your funeral director of such. Usually they need two to three days to procure same. They will contact the nearest military installation to solicit help for your loved ones funeral.

What can the family of an eligible veteran expect?

The core elements of the funeral honors ceremony, which will be conducted are:

- Flag folding
- Flag presentation
- Playing of Taps

The veteran’s parent Service representative will present the flag.

On the day of the service the military personnel who will perform the military part of the funeral will arrive at the grave site. There they will provide the folding of the flag and playing of the taps. After the taps they will fold the flag and give the flag to the closes next of kin.
